Welcome to the first Trope Tuesday Link-Up! As a reminder each week there will be a trope for you to use as inspiration. All post types are welcome: lists, book reviews, anything really, feel free to make it your own. Please link back to All the Books and Chocolate in your own post so that others know where to find more information. You can find the link-up link at the bottom of the page.
Chosen One
We are starting out with Chosen One, an often-used trope in Fantasy and Sci-Fi. In this trope, a character (usually the protagonist) has been marked as especially gifted or otherwise uniquely equipped to complete a special mission. For this list, I am listing some books that that this trope and turn it on its head just a little.
The Elemental Trilogy
This is one of my favorite fantasy series. I think it is for sure one of the most romantic series I’ve read. I don’t want to give too much away, but I do enjoy this book’s take on prohecy.
House of Earth and Blood
Bryce from the House of Earth and Blood is not your typical goody-goody characters and that is exactly why I love it so much! She has a past and baggage but she’s still a hero.
Carry-On
What I loved most about Carry On is how it fixed everything I hated about Harry Potter! Simon knows he doesn’t deserve to be the Chosen One and he knows it. Also, Baz is my favorite.
Ninth House
Much like House of Earth and Blood, Alex in Ninth House is not your typical chosen one. In fact, she probably shouldn’t be able to accomplish what she does.
What books do you think do a good job of changing the chosen one trope?
I have never herd of Carry On. The comparison to Harry Potter has me intrigued. Saving that one for later!
It’s so good! I won’t say it’s better than HP but it’s great.
