Top Ten Tuesday – Extraordinary Book Titles

 

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Extraordinary Book Titles.    Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and has since moved to That Artsy Reader Girl beginning in January of 2018.

For this topic, I decided to choose books where it was the title alone that really caught my attention and made me want to read the book.  That means none of these were based on recommendations or previous experience with the author.  It also means there is going to be a mix of books I loved and books I didn’t.

10. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver was the first book I read by Maggie Stiefvater, and while it isn’t my favorite there was a reason I read so many more of her books.  This was one of the first taste of werewolf lore and I really loved it.

9. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

I assumed this book would be more like Dangerous Girls ( a little further down on this list).  I had no idea that I was going to be reading an amazing detective novel set at a boarding school!  You can read my full review here.

8. A Discovery of Witches By Deborah Harkness

How can you not be intrigued by this title, I mean A Discovery of Witches, is this book going to be about the first witches?  Turns out not really, but it was still a great read.

7. A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry

This was one of those books that falls into the didn’t love it category.  It wasn’t so bad that I DNF’d it but It just didn’t do it for me.

6. The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

This title is so vague and ominous it begs you to read the synopsis at the very least.  Which is what I did, and then I wanted to read the rest of the book, which I loved.  It’s an interesting take on fairy-tale retellings.

5. Hourglass by Myra McEntire

I knew this book would have something to do with time, but I didn’t think it would become one of my favorite books about time travel.  Though the rest of the series was a bit of a disappointment this book is still one of my favorites.

4. Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas

I anticipated this to be more of a Thelma and Louise type of deal.  But it was not and I’m glad it wasn’t it was so much better.  This book left me with a few more questions than answers, but I really enjoyed it.

3. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

This was the one where I feel like the title maybe fits the least, but I also don’t read as much gothic literature as others so perhaps the title makes more sense in that context.  Whatever the case, the title intrigued me and I really enjoyed this whole series.

2. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

I read this book so long ago that I don’t even remember what I expected upon seeing this title. But whatever I though it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting.  I really enjoyed this series especially being introduced to Noah Shaw.

1. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

First of all, this is on my list of favorite reads of all time, and if not for the title I would never have picked it up.  Why did Evely Hugo have seven husbands and more to the point show did she.  If you haven’t read this one trust me you should.  You can read my review here.
