Synopsis

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why–or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch–and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes.

Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Review

The Inheritance Games has gotten rave reviews, and I get it because it’s fantastic! The whole premise of this book was incredibly unique, and like everyone else, I loved it.

This book reminded me a lot of the Truly Devious series. I enjoyed all of the twists and turns in this book, and I especially loved the characters. Avery is so brilliant, and I loved seeing her outwit the Hawthorne boys. It was entertaining to see how they underestimated her and how she could thwart them and prove herself. I loved how responsible she was. She was smart and knew what she needed to do to turn her life around.

The Hawthornes were very interesting. The boys were especially intriguing. They all are so different from each other. It’s a little surprising they are brothers. But even still, you can tell they love each other. I enjoyed how they each had a different relationship with each other, as well as Avery. And I have to say, if this wasn’t a YA book, I feel like I know where this would go…

The mystery was fun. This is not really one that you can figure out on your own, though there were some things that I did see unfolding as they did. Overall, it was fun to see how this was finally unfolding, even if I feel a little like we are still missing some answers.
