Review: Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett

Bailey Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online as Alex.  Bailey was a very safe distance away making this online crush just a fantasy until she moves in with her dad, who just happens to live in the same California surfing town as her online crush.

Bailey is not one to take risks so she doesn’t tell Alex she’s moved to his hometown. Instead, she sets off to find him first so she can check him out in person.  Plans are going well until Porter Roth enters her life.

Does Bailey continue her search for Alex, or spend time with the irritating but oh so hot Porter?

This may be the most predictable book I have ever read.  It is literally the plot so almost every romantic comedy ever, specifically The Shop Around the Corner or for you non-classic film connoisseurs You’ve Got Mail.  And you know what?   still loved it!

These characters!!! If I am honest, the reason I don’t read a lot of contemporary fiction is because the characters, usually the protagonist, bugs the hell out of me.  Not the case here.  Miraculously, Bailey didn’t irritate me at all.  And Porter, well add another book boyfriend to the list.  I am a book boyfriend polyandrist.

Yes, this is predictable, but I think its supposed to be, literally the twist is in the Goodreads synopsis.  The plot is still fantastic.  It’s about seeing these characters grow, not about the big twist at the end of the book.  The writing was fantastic.  The dialogue between the two main characters was not cheesy like it can be sometimes.

There were a couple of things that I thought could have been handled better.  The book tackled some big issues, and I felt like some of them didn’t get the attention they deserved.

I loved this book, and I will be adding more of  Jenn Bennett’s books to my to be read list.
