Review

Enchantee has everything I love, magic, history, and romance, which explains why I adored this book so much! I would consider this book magical realism, which is a fantasy subgenre that I am LOVING!  This book is set on the cusp of the french revolution which adds danger to Camille’s already very dangerous game. What I loved most about this book is that you were able to get a taste of both what the aristocracy and a regular citizen were going through.  So often in historical fiction, the focus is on one or the other, so it was very refreshing to get both sides.

Camille did annoy me at times, which happens a lot for me with YA books that are told from the first person.  For the most part though, Camille was an enjoyable protagonist, who was really just trying to do what was best for her and her sister.  This book had a lot of twists, some that I saw coming and others that were a surprise. I also liked that it challenged Camille’s perceptions and end the end made her sympathetic to both sides.

Enchantee could have been a standalone, but there is another book coming out, and after reading Enchantee I cannot wait for that one.  I loved this world and these characters and I cannot wait to go back.
