Bookish Charities: Part 5

In keeping with the spirit of the season, I wanted the share the spirit of giving by shining a light on some bookish charities.  Over the next six weeks, I will be highlighting 12 bookish charities.

First Book

In low-income communities, books and educational resources are scarce. Kids start school behind their more affluent peers and never catch up.  Through their award-winning distribution channels, the First Book Marketplace, and the First Book National Book Bank, we deliver resources — chosen based on educator feedback — to where they are needed most.

How you can help:

First Book has a lit of great ways to give.  You can choose for example to donate to basic needs items to hurricane victims. You can also donate funds that will have a big impact by sending it directly to those areas that need it most.  They also have a marketplace in which a portion of your purchase goes to helping children in need.

Books for Africa

Books For Africa remains the largest shipper of donated text and library books to the African continent, shipping over 42 million books to all 55 countries on the African continent since 1988.  In fiscal year 2018 alone, Books For Africa shipped 2.3 million books, and 123 computers and e-readers containing 283,000 digital books, to 29 African countries. More than $2.2 million was raised last year to ship these books to the students of Africa.

How you can help:

You can donate funds or books.  If you’d like to donate to a specific country or project you can do that as well.  If you live near St. Paul, MN or Atlanta, GA you can stop by one of their book drop of locations, if not you can mail in books to the address below:
